This photo is from Alberobello, Italy 🇮🇹.
Ever heard of it?
Neither have I until I saw it on Instagram a few months ago.
I knew I had to visit after seeing a few travel influencers talk about it.
But then I had all these stories pop into my head…
“I’m too busy to take a trip.”
“My productivity will drop if I travel.”
“I can’t take time away from work right now.”
Then another thought came to mind.
Why am I working so hard if I’m not able to enjoy my life?
As high-achievers, we often feel guilty about taking time off from work.
The idea is that we have too much to do and not enough time to do it.
The truth?
Work NEVER ends.
There is no time when you’ll be less busy.
You MAKE the time.
And that’s exactly what I did.
I booked a flight to Italy last minute.
And wow, what an incredible trip!
I visited former clients in Milan and got a tour of their private art collection.
I spent several days in the ancient white city of Ostuni.
I took a short trip to Alberobello to see the trulli, whitewashed stone huts with conical roofs.
After I got back, I felt refreshed!
It’s funny how that happens.
You say that you don’t have time to take a trip because it’ll cut into productivity.
But after you get back, your productivity skyrockets because a trip was exactly what you needed.
So what’s an adventure that you’ve been putting off?
My advice:
Go and schedule it now!
Here is your Unstoppable After 40 Friday Digest:
1. Why ‘Healthspan’ is more important than lifespan.
In 2014, Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel sparked debate with his essay, “Why I Hope to Die at 75”, arguing that living a long time loses its appeal in the face of declining health.
Ten years later and the dilemma persists.
The U.S. life expectancy stands at 77.5 years. But healthy life expectancy lags at 66.1 years (WHO).
In other words, you can expect to live to 77 years old. But the last 10 years of your life will be spent watching and feeling your health fall apart.
Aches and pains.
Inability to live on your own.
Frequent doctors appointments.
You have a choice though:
Surrender to this statistic or defy it.
How do you defy it?
Choose to focus on your health.
Specifically, you must exercise enough.
Look at the picture below.
The left photos show the quadriceps of a 40 y/o and a 70 y/o triathlete. The right is a 74 y/o sedentary man.
The darker part is muscle and the lighter part is fat.
If you don’t exercise enough, you’ll end up like the 74-year-old man who’s leg muscles are covered in fat and have shrunk.
If you do, you can have basically the same level of muscle and leanness at 70 that you did at 40.
It’s okay to focus on your career or business in your 30s.
But when you hit 40s, your body demands a change. It’s not just about looking better; it’s a necessity for thriving in the decades ahead.
Your body requires more than what worked for you in your 20s. You hav less time, more stress, and more responsibilties. And that’s what this newsletter it’s about: embracing a lifestyle that adds life to your years and allows you to live your best decades.
The choice is yours!
2. The best way to reboot your metabolism.
When we think about muscle, we tend to think about feats of strength or the sculpted body of athletes.
In reality, muscle accounts for so much more than that.
As Dr. Gabrielle Lyon says, “Muscle is the organ of longevity.”
As the body’s largest endocrine organ, muscle actually determines everything about the trajectory of health and aging.
What I tell my clients is building muscle is like building your net worth.
The more muscle you have the more you can weather an economic downturn or a bad decision.
It’s insurance, it’s an investment, it’s your net worth.
It’s really important to maintain and it’s so foundational.
How?
If you have limited time to exercise, focus on the Pareto principle of strength training. Focus on full-body routines if you only have two or three days per week in the gym.
In other words, working every muscle group, every single time you show up and focus on getting stronger. The stronger and healthier your muscles, the healthier your metabolism will be.
It is your metabolic currency. And that’s why building muscle is my #1 piece of advice for you to reboot your metabolism to create a healthier, stronger, and younger body.
3. Exercise of the Week: This is the #1 leg exercise I give my clients
Bulgarian split squats.
This is an exercise you can do in the gym with dumbbells or a barbell or at home with your own weight for reps.
But many people don’t know how to do it properly.
Watch my video tutorial on LinkedIn or Twitter and learn the right way to do this exercise!
