“Ted, what’s better: free weights or machines?”

A common question I get is about which tool leads to the best results in the gym.

I remember when I was overly focused on the exercise tools.

Barbells.

Kettlebells.

Dumbbells.

Exercise bands.

Body weight training.

The truth?

They can all work.

Yes, each tool has pros and cons.
But even more important than which tool you use are the training principles that you follow.

Are you consistent?

Are you using the good form?

Are you increasing the reps?

Are you lifting more weight each week?

The answer to the above questions matters so much more than the type of tool you use.

This is one of the biggest breakthroughs I had in 24 years of studying this stuff.

Once I learned the principles that drive results, I could apply them to any tool I wish.

Principles over tools always!

Here is your Unstoppable After 40 Friday Digest:

1. Breaking the age code.

If you think that getting old means being fat, tired, and achy, then that’s what’ll probably happen to you. And this isn’t just my opinion. Numerous studies have found a connection between our beliefs about ageing and health.

In a 2002 study, researchers found that people with positive age beliefs lived an average of 7.5 years than those with negative beliefs. Compared with other factors that contribute to longevity, age beliefs had a greater impact than high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, and smoking.

So what should you do?

Write down what you believe about ageing. Then, evaluate how much you exercise, how well you sleep, your body fat levels, and your blood work.

If you’re not putting in the work, then it might be your mindset about ageing that is causing you to self-sabotage.

After all, why try to get in shape if it’s a losing battle?

2. A supplement that boosts your brain function as you age.

I used to think multivitamins were a waste of time and money.

I thought that if you ate a nutritious diet taking something like a multi was just giving you expensive pee.

But research in the past 10 years is showing that there are measurable results from taking this supplement – especially if you’re middle-aged or older.

In fact, a 2023 randomized controlled trial with 573 participants who were at least 60 years old found that a multivitamin prevented cognitive decline and enhanced memory.

It was a subtle effect (the people in the study performed like they were 2 years younger) but it was significant. This is why we have our coaching clients take a multivitamin when they first start with us. Of course, exercise is KING with cognitive benefits. But taking a multi is worth adding to your supplement stack.

3. Best exercise to do while travelling.

The exercise of the week is the Band-Resisted Push-Up.

This is my favorite exercise to do while travelling.

It’s very effective for building upper body strength and muscle. And it uses a powerful technique called “accommodating resistance.”

This is where the exercise gives resistance that matches your body’s points of mechanical advantage.

In other words, the band gives the least resistance at the bottom (when you’re the weakest) and the most resistance at the top (when you’re the strongest). I was able to bench press 200 lbs without having bench pressed in years because I’ve been doing these.

Not a huge amount of weight…but not bad.

Also, the push-up is easier on your shoulders and elbows than a bench press. How many sets and reps?

Try 2-3 sets of 5-15 reps.

Give it a try!

Quote of the week:

Imagine there is a small version of you and a big version.
When you are playing small, your behavior is timid, you feel less than others, and you are often surrounded by people and projects that drain you.
When you are playing big, your behavior is confident, you feel motivated, and you tend to be investing in people and projects that energize you.
How can you spend more time playing the big version of yourself this year?
– James Clear
