“I just need to go back to keto because it worked so well when I did it.”
If it worked so well, then why did you stop in the first place?
The truth:
You don’t need keto or to cut carbs. You already have a diet. You just need to understand it better.
Here’s what I mean…
I’ve staying in a hotel for the past 10 days.
The hotel has a brunch breakfast full of high-calorie, low-protein options. My room has a small kitchen. And the fridge is super small and the freezer only has room for one ice cube tray.
Back in the day, I would’ve said “screw it” and would’ve just gone with the flow…eating the high-calorie food and putting on a few pounds.
Now?
I went food shopping and got protein powder and fat-free yogurt.
My strategy is to have a protein shake before every meal to make sure I eat less of the high-calorie foods. The result?
My weight is staying put and I’ve been enjoying some of the great restaurants near the hotel. Most high-performers think they need more discipline or to be stricter with their diet.
But what I’ve found works best for me and for my clients is to create a plan that makes staying in shape easy when life throws a curveball at you.
No fad diets are needed.
You already have a diet.
You just need better strategies to maintain it when you’re out of your routine!
Here is your Unstoppable After 40 Friday Digest:
1. Does alcohol affect weight loss?
One of the most common questions I get is about alcohol in fat loss.
The short answer is this: Alcohol won’t stop you from losing fat if you stay within your calories.
But there are other issues.
Drinking typically leads us to lose track of how much we’re drinking and eating. And it can also cause you to have cravings. This makes it easier to say “screw it” and overeat.
Then there are the multiple recent studies that have found that even light drinking leads to brain damage. This is one study from 2022 found that even one drink a day had negative effects on brain health.
So be aware of how much you drink and its effects on your diet and exercise habits.
And if you’d like a deep dive, I recorded an episode talking about alcohol and weight loss.

2. Study reveals the best all-natural treatment for mental health
People often ask me how I got through the tragedies in my family.
The answer is that it all started with exercise. This profound experience fuels my passion for empowering others on their health journeys.
While many things can help get you through a tough time, exercise must be part of the solution.
A study from 2023 confirms this by showing physical activity is 1.5 times more effective than counseling or medications in managing depression, anxiety, and distress. It also found that all forms of exercise are effective – including yoga, Pilates, aerobic, and resistance training.
If you’re navigating tough times or simply striving to be the best version of yourself, incorporating exercise into your life isn’t just beneficial—it’s essential.
3. A deadlift alternative without pain
I’m not a fan of deadlifting from the ground.
People have different leg and arm lengths, making it a tough move for many people.
However, I’m a huge Romanian Deadlift (RDL) fan.
No matter what your body dimensions are, you can safely and effectively do an RDL.
How many sets and reps?
Try 1-5 sets of 6-12 reps.
Rest for 2 minutes between each set. Or pair it with an upper-body pushing exercise like the bench press.
Also, there are some technique tips that often get left out.
And that’s what I get into with the EOW video.
Legendary Life Coaching Client Highlight: Kyle C.
Meet Kyle, a 39-year-old busy professional who was hopping from workout to workout for years…only to aggravate his injuries.
He is like most of my clients, busy growing his career and taking care of his family and let’s not forget – nursing a meniscus injury post-surgery.
Kyle was on a mission to trim down without being obsessed about his abs. He aimed to be an energetic role model for his kids and find the mental clarity that only exercise could offer him.
In 3 months, Kyle:
- Dropped 24 pounds
- Said goodbye to his beer belly
- Gained a fitter and stronger body with just 20 minutes a day
- Reduced his knee pain by 80%
- Savoring family meals and vacations without feeling guilty the next day
