Ask Ted 97: 7 Powerful Ways To End Procrastination Today

Listener’s Question:

“What is your advice on procrastination? When I work out my mind tells me that it is bored, you don’t feel good, do this later, do something else more important now and all the self-help talk won’t help me. This habit also affects other areas of my life. I start a lot of things and complete about 70%-80% of the work, then I quit. I realize I have a problem moving from beginner level to intermediate level or to make things into a habit because I always look for the next things or worry about what people think of me. Psychologically, I do things to impress people even when people not in my life and I have a hard time letting go and accepting myself.”

Answer:

To be honest, when I first got into the fitness industry I was in love with it but after a few years and hitting a ceiling that I didn’t know how to get beyond, I started partying and going back to old bad habits. I knew I needed to do something, I was disorganized and unprofessional. I knew I had to work on the business part to get to the next level but I would constantly put off studying business although I knew it was important.

A lot of us can relate to that. We start things and then quit or we don’t start at all. To beat procrastination and ultimately become your best self here are 7 Powerful Ways to End Procrastination Today:

  1. Write down your goals and give yourself a deadline
  2. Break your goals into small pieces and focus on the slight edge principle
  3. Visualize the future you want
  4. Use fear to motivate you
  5. Build accountability
  6. Reward your progress
  7.  Build a habit of taking action

I also recommend that anyone dealing with procrastination read, The War of Art by Steven Pressfield.
