Podcast Transcription: The One Weird Trick To Immediately Improve Your Life (That You Can Do Today) with Ted Ryce

Ted Ryce: Today's episode is the one weird trick to immediately improve your life (that you can start doing today). And I know that sounds pretty clickbaity, but this is going to be a combination of both a personal story for me, and also something that I believe will help you to level up, especially if you're here because you want to level up your health, you want to get better at taking care of your health, you know it's important for you and you haven't been making the time for it.

You've been letting other priorities or maybe even other people's priorities take precedence over taking care of yourself. I'm hoping that this will hit home for you and help you to take that action that you know you need to take.

So welcome back to the Legendary Life Podcast. I'm your host, Ted Ryce, a health expert and coach to executives, entrepreneurs, and other high-performing professionals. And we put on this show for two reasons.

Number one, I've been in the business for over 24 years now. It's actually coming on to be 25, almost a quarter of a century; it's kind of crazy. And during that quarter of almost a quarter of a century, I made a lot of mistakes. And I learned from people who are very confident but what they shared with me didn't lead to the results I had hoped.

And I want to save you that trouble and give you the fast track to success with your health. And the second reason is I know some of you are looking for someone to help you, to guide you, to be your mentor so that you can have as much success with your health as you do with your career, your wealth, your relationships, and you'll know very quickly if I'm the guy for you or not just by listening. So, let's dive into today.

And I'm in Lisbon, Portugal right now. I've been here for the past couple of months. Took a two-week trip to Italy. If you've been listening to the show for a while, you may have heard that I talked about that trip. And today's my last day in Lisbon because tomorrow I'm flying to Miami and then flying to Jamaica the next day.

And I plan to stay in Lisbon until November 20th, but I'm leaving early. And the reason I'm leaving early is because I'm part of a business coaching program, and my coach convinced me to go meet him in Jamaica.

And I don't want to go. I wanted to stay in Europe. That was the plan. Stayed until November 20th.

But as I was looking at the state of my business, which, by the way, is going great, we've grown so much. I'll just tell you this. I went from 11,000 followers on Twitter to 31,000; got 20,000 followers in the past couple of months. We have a lot of new people coming in. This has been one of the best months of our business ever. And we've been having great months.

So, I'm not going to go meet my business coach because I need to make more money, although that's part of the goal.

The goal is how do I structure my business in a way that creates the most success for my clients, the minimal stress for me and Gisele and the other people who work for us.

And, of course, that gives us the lifestyle that we really want to live. That's very different than signing up clients.

And we're good at signing up clients. We're great at getting our clients results. As I said, I've been a coach for almost a quarter of a century. I'm the best I've ever been at coaching. And I also want to share this with you. I'm not just in a business coaching group, but I'm also in a mentorship group teaching me how to help my clients at a deeper level by reading their blood chemistry.

And seeing things that a doctor won't typically go into, and I'm not going to talk about what that is today, but just to suffice it to say that that's my wheelhouse, that's what I really want to be studying.

That's the mentorship that I, when I join those calls, I'm just so psyched to join those calls when I'm going through the course material and learning the nutritional biochemistry and reading research papers about nutrition and supplementation strategies that made a meaningful improvement in people's lives, in their health. That's my thing.

And the business coaching I'm not as big of a fan of, to be honest. I do it because I need to do it though. And in fact, I know that to have the type of business that I really want to have and to have the type of lifestyle that I really want to have and to give my clients better results, I need to grow as a leader in this way, not as an expert. I feel like sometimes I know way too much.

And certainly, you know, there's always room for growth, and in that other mentorship program, I'm learning a lot. But the pace of improvement is quite slow compared to the amount of growth that I need to do as a leader. I'll give you an example.

I just got the resources that I'm supposed to go through before I go to this business event, this business coaching event. And one of them is...

Let me look it up because I'm going to get the name wrong. The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell.

And if you don't know John Maxwell, and probably most of you do, but in case you don't, he's a famous leadership guru from the US, someone I've known about for a long time, and someone who has a book out that's, so many people have recommended to me, and I've never read.

But now that I'm part of this business coaching group, and now that I've committed both financially and time-wise to go to Jamaica, it's actually a big disruption in my time, more so than the financial cost of going because we've already paid for the business coaching for the year.

So much smaller, just a couple of thousand dollars to go but a huge disruption to my time and to my plans. And as I'm listening to, and I want to be honest, I've been reluctant, like I reluctantly signed up to go. I signed up because I knew I needed to evolve as a leader because our leadership sets the ceiling of what we're able to accomplish in our business.

It sets the limits on our ability to influence, in my case, my business partner, the people who are working for us, the people who are potential clients, and certainly the people who have hired me, my own clients.

They all respect me as an expert, but sometimes my leadership skills, I feel, especially in those challenging situations, need to upgrade. So, I'm going.

And as I'm listening to John Maxwell's book. Again, it's not a book I would ever go, "Oh, the 21 Laws of Irrefutable Leadership, that's sign me up." Right? I just downloaded it on Audible, and I'm going through the video course. But it's not something I would immediately look at and go, "Ooh, this is what I need to do."

And my whole point is this, as I'm starting to listen to this book and information that I wouldn't normally go for, and I prefer to learn about nutritional biochemistry, something hits me: that this is exactly what I need, that this is what I'm learning, this information, this thought process, this looking at some of the challenges that we're having in our business.

This is the solution. It is not learning more nutritional biochemistry as much as I love learning it. It's not reading more research. And I'm saying this because...

Maybe you're in a similar situation where things are going quite well for you business-wise, and that is your wheelhouse, showing up in your career and crushing it, whether you're an executive running a company or head of a sales department or a consultant or an attorney or a medical doctor, you're crushing it in your career and you just gravitate towards those things that make you feel like yes, this is my wheelhouse. This is what I need to excel in.

But really, you're like me. When I read this nutritional biochemistry stuff, it does help me get better. And I'm even getting better results with my clients.

And I also know that it's not the low-hanging fruit. It's not the area that needs the most growth. It's my leadership skills.

And maybe you're doing that with your health. Maybe you're falling into the same trap that I fall into with business. I'll be honest. I'm a reluctant business owner entrepreneur. I do it because there's a lot of things I do love. I love creating content like this, doing this podcast, having guests on and interviewing them and growing, having those relationships.

I love coaching my clients. I love seeing the results that my clients get. When we win, we win together. Gets me pumped. Even after, again, nearly a quarter of a century of doing this.

But the area I need the most growth in is to create or to build better leadership skills. And maybe for you, you're a great leader. Maybe you're running, I don't know, an eight-figure, nine-figure company.

Maybe it's yours, maybe you're the founder. I have a recent client who, get this, he founded a company, it was acquired by a bigger company, and then they made him the CEO of the bigger company. And it's in the natural energy sector.

He must be an incredible leader.

But for me, it's the place where I know I need to step up. Just like my new client and some of the other clients, I have some rock star people who I'm working with right now. It's just very exciting.

It's an honor to be working with some of the people that I'm working with right now, and they're realizing they're making the same mistake with their health.

And so, my message to you is the one thing that can take your life and improve it immediately is what is that area you know you need to focus on, and there are only three big areas in your life. There's your health, there's your wealth, there's your relationship.

What is the area that needs the most focus? What is the area where it's just, you know, in your heart, you've got to take action on that.

And if that's having, if it's not coming to you right away, here's what I suggest, and this is what I do with clients sometimes, is rate your health, wealth, and relationships on a scale of one to 10.

What needs the most work? Which is interesting because I just want to share this really quick. I feel like the thing that I'm missing even health-wise is more confident certainty, enjoyment of running my business.

In fact, when I was listening to this 21 Laws of Leadership, I got super pumped up. And I don't know if you can hear it, but I'm a little bit sick.

And I've been exercising, I've been eating well. I've been doing a lot of things, but I feel like the, let's say the stress, for lack of a better word, even though it's mostly positive stress, I don't hate my business or anything like that. It's just, it gets frustrating. It's like growing pains, right? It's the frustration of getting to a new level.

And I feel like there's no amount of supplements, exercise, or nutrition optimization that I can do that can make up for the lack of that area. And that's why I'm going to go meet my business coach.

And all of a sudden, since I'm about to leave and I started really diving into because I was reluctantly going. I'm like, man, I really want to stay in Europe and meet people and I want to stay until the 20th. That's what I paid for my Airbnb until that time all these reasons, but I know that it's not about that. That's the sunk cost fallacy thinking that, oh, I need to stay in Europe because I paid for my Airbnb and I might not get the money back.

But it's not about that. It's about what do you want? What do you want, Ted? What is going to move? And more importantly, what's going to move the needle more staying in Europe and getting your money's worth out of your Airbnb? Or is it going and leveling up and spending time around people where you're going to be the least successful business owner there, and we're all going to be working on the same sort of skills. That's where I've got to be.

And isn't it interesting, I've already had a shift and I'm already feeling better. And so, I just think it's so fascinating sometimes, because I see the same pattern of behavior in my clients. They're like, hey, we got a new client, let's do this deal.

Oh, let's celebrate the success of the new client and the new project and. But those are the things that they're comfortable with. What they really need to do is work on that other area. And I would ask you, what is that other area for you?

And sometimes people think it's their health, but it's really something else. It's their relationships. In fact, sometimes not recently, not in years, this doesn't happen anymore, or at least it hasn't happened in recent memory, in years.

I would have people hop on that call, the breakthrough call that I'm always talking about. If you want to work with me, you hop on a 15-minute call. And I had some people hop on that call in the past, maybe two or three years ago. And it was clear that focusing on their health was really a way of escaping from their relationship.

And some of those situations got even more clear when either the husband or the wife got on the call. And I saw the relationship dynamic, if you will. And I was just thinking, man, this couple needs a marriage counselor. They do not need me. In fact, if they could solve that, then there may not be as much overeating and drinking.

And I just wanted to say that because I'm not, I don't want you thinking, "Well, hey, it's your health, come and book a call with me." Now, of course, if that's what you feel like it is, then yeah, book a call with me. But think hard. And again, rate yourself on a scale of one to 10 on that health, wealth, and relationships.

And whatever comes up the shortest is your biggest opportunity for growth. And even if you want to improve your health in your relationships or the lowest rating, if you improve your relationships, in my observation, most of the time that improves people's health.

Just like in my situation, if it's going to be hard to improve my relationships or improve my health without stepping up in my business, it's going to be hard to do it. I'm already doing quite well health-wise and relationship-wise. A big part of some of the challenges.

I'm not present enough because I'm thinking about what's going on with my business or I'm stressed out about something that was supposed to work right but didn't work right or someone we hired and it didn't go as planned. So, solving that or not even solving, improving that area will always help the other two areas.

So that's what I want to leave you with today. What is that area for you? What is that area for you?

More importantly, how can you invest in that area to make an improvement? For me, you know what I'm doing. I'm going to go meet my business coach, even though I've been on two calls a week with this guy. And I've been working with him for two years.

So even though I've been working with this guy for two years and I've been on calls with him twice a week, almost every week, for two years.

I'm going to go meet him in person because I know that's what I need to do to level up.

And it's one of the reasons we do in-person retreats too. Now I want to say one more thing before I sign off here. The events give you motivation. In other words, I'm not going to learn leadership skills in the three days I'm going to do this event. I'm not going to be a leadership master, let's say. I'm not going to be like, "Well, I showed up three days ago, now it's three days later, and I've solved all my problems."

However, what it does when you show up in person, I've seen this when we work with our clients, it gets them to make a decision to level up, to commit to the process. Because the truth is improving your health. It's a daily thing, but you can't change your health in a day.

If you eat well one day, exercise well one day, get your steps in, sleep well for one day, fantastic, but it's about the process and being consistent with it over time. And that's the hard part. Because we always want to drop off. We always want to push it to the side. "Oh, this is more important," especially during the holidays, especially when it's inconvenient. And so, what I want to tell you is...

I've realized the path to the next level is I got to do this stuff when it's not easy. I've got to cut my trip in Europe short.

I've got to even spend a little bit of extra money if necessary to get there because long term, it's not a cost, it's an investment. It's the thing that I need to do to become the person that I need to be so that I have the type of life that I want. And I would make the suggestion that it's the same for you. So, what do you need to do?

Sometimes a book can be a good start. Sometimes a podcast can be a good start. But if you want to go deeper, we're talking courses. And if you want to go deeper than that, we're talking coaching. And we're talking events and really the combination of like my highest level that I work with clients, it's a combination of events and coaching. Because that is what creates the fastest, most powerful, and profound change. How do I know? Because I've been through the process and I've done it with other people. So, what do you need to do?

And how much can you invest? How much are you willing to invest? And I want to leave you with one more thought.

If your results aren't where you want them to be, and this goes with any area of your life.

It's not about giving up. It's about being more ferocious, being more tenacious, going after it to the next level.

So, I could say, you know what? I've been on two coaching calls a week with my business coach. I really don't need to do more than that.

And if I'm honest, I'm not satisfied with - the amount of financial success, great - but the operations of the business and the clumsiness and the clunkiness even though none of our clients ever complain about that. In fact, I got a great compliment saying, "Oh, yeah, I mean, I don't know you maybe you guys are a mess behind the scenes. But you don't come across that way you come across like you got your stuff together."

I was like, thank you so much.

Uh, but it was a bit chaotic at times. And I want it to be better for all parties involved. So how committed are you? What are you willing to do? And if you don't like the results that you're getting right now, there's only two choices, either you accept them. And because those are the results that you're getting from your current level of investment in that area or you take it up a notch.

That's what I want to leave you with. Hope that helps. Got to go make a coaching call. Have an amazing week and I'll speak to you soon.
