Podcast Transcription: Stop Sabotaging Your Health And Fitness Goals And Get Into The Best Shape Of Your Life In 2023 with Ted Ryce

Ted Ryce: Have you ever seen some of the results of my coaching program and wondered, what exactly is going on there? What are his clients doing? Is it just tracking macros and lifting weights, and is that it? And tracking steps? Or is there more to it?

And you may have heard some of the success stories that I've shared on the podcast and also wondered, that's interesting. But you still don't have an idea of what it might be like to be coached.

And more specifically, even if you're not interested in coaching, what are the lessons you could learn to put into your life from a person like myself, or learning from a person like myself who's been doing this for over 23 years, almost 24 years now?

Well, if you want to get into the best shape of your life, I'm going to share a secret with you today. So, if that sounds interesting to you, you're in the right place. What is up, and welcome to the Legendary Life podcast. I'm your host, Ted Ryce, coach to entrepreneurs, founders and busy professionals.

And why do this podcast is for two reasons. Number one, I want to share my 23 years of experience with you so you can avoid the pitfalls, the trial and error, and all the BS, misinformation and just overwhelming amount of information out there to make it simple so that you can get into the best shape of your life.

And the second reason is this. Some of you are going to be very high performers and you know the power of investing in a coach to reach your goals faster. And I want you to hire me instead of someone else because I want you to know that what I've shared with you on this show works because you've tried it.

So, let's get into today because I want to share something really important with you. I want to talk about what it takes to get sustainable results. And I'm not talking about the temporary results you get from holding yourself at gunpoint to stick to a short term plan, because that is really what it's like.

It's like I love carbs and I like going to restaurants and I like my wife's cookies and I like sharing dessert with my partner, my husband or my wife on our special date nights. And I like sharing a slice of cake with my child on their birthday. But I'm going to do keto.

And you know you can't keep it up. You have no idea how you're going to make it work during those situations. And as a result, you gain it back. So I'm not talking about those short term plans. I'm talking about what does it take to create long term success, long term consistent results that are easier than any you've ever had before? No struggles or stress, no restrictive diets, no extreme workouts.

And my clients, they lose about 20 to 30 pounds within a four-month period. And I share that a lot. And one of the reasons I'm doing this today is because I feel like I focus more on the superficial aspects that are important. It's important to lose 20 to 30 pounds if you've got it excess hanging on your frame. So many good reasons to lose.

It’s not because society tells you to or whatever. It's for you, your health and health, how you feel about you. Now, it is normal for my clients to lose 20 to 30 pounds, but my goal is not to help you do that. It's to teach you how to keep your results and stay consistent with your healthy habits in your life, whatever curveballs get thrown your way. And that's the key, right?

So, some of the most important things you'll learn today and some of the most important things that I teach in my program will be tools to get you back on track any time that life throws you off course. And listen, how did I come up with this? Well, I've been doing this for 23 years.

And when I say that, I don't mean like, oh, I figured out the code 23 years ago, and I've just been doing the same thing, and it works so well. It's been 23 years of hell. Exaggeration, right? But a lot of learning and trial and error. And going down roads… I mean, I was talking on Twitter last night about a catastrophic back injury that I had.

Why? How did I injure my back? I don't even have a good story. There's no big car accident. There’s no…It’s, I hurt my back because I was trying to lose fat, and I didn't want to do the things, nutrition wise, that I knew I needed to do.

So, I just told myself, you know what? I'm going to eat clean, and I'm going to work out. Except it didn't work that well. And so what I did, being the extremely smart person that I was in 2016, which isn't even that long ago, really, I decided to double up on my workouts.

So, I did two workouts per day. I don't know how long it lasted, because what came after wiped out part of my memory. I felt a little tweak in my back. And it was an afternoon workout, because when I was a personal trainer, I would train clients in the morning and then I’d take the afternoon off, because people were working.

And then I'd train clients after they came home from work. And I remember being at my evening clients in… oh, gosh, I can't remember the place. It’s where Enrique Iglesias lives. It's not Morningside, but it's in downtown Miami. He lives in the same neighborhood, a gated neighborhood there.

And I remember being at my clients and saying, “Oh, I think I tweaked my back a little bit.” And I went home after training her and her family, and I did this yoga stretch called Child's Pose. And if you know yoga, you know what that is. If you don't, it's basically you just imagine being on your knees, on the ground, on your shins, and you just kind of sit your butt back on your heels and then lay your head on the ground so you're getting a nice back stretch.

I said, “I think I just, or thought I just pulled a muscle.” And after that, I went to sleep. And the next morning, I couldn't walk. And when I say I couldn't walk, I don't mean like, oh, man, I couldn't walk. And that's an exaggeration. I mean, I tried to support my body weight with my legs, and I crumpled to the ground.

Crumpled to the ground. I couldn't stand. It's not that I couldn't walk. I couldn't even stand. And after that situation, and that's just one of a couple of. shitty circumstances that I got myself into, I started realizing what the real problem was, not just for myself, but for my clients as well. It's not about diet and exercise.

Well, it isn't. It isn't. So let me explain. If you're like most of the busy, high-achieving people that I work with, you've probably had success with taking care of your health and fitness in the past. You're hardworking, smart, discipline, and you find a way to get results. That's how you've gotten the success you have in your life.

And in those efforts, you've probably been in a place where you achieved great results, results that you were proud of. Maybe it was with keto. Maybe it was with running triathlons or other endurance sports. Maybe it was doing some special diet from a doctor, a celebrity doctor. But the problem usually comes when you try to keep those results.

Because as a high achiever, you're your own worst enemy. You're at high risk of self-sabotage, which can cause you to lose not only your results, but also the energy and motivation to get back on track. So what am I talking about here? These are the two big, unique psychological hazards that derail high achievers like you and also me.

The first is that someone as focused as you, often go searching in the world of health and fitness for solutions that get results ‘fast.’ I need results yesterday. And you're going to find stuff that works, which is usually very restrictive diets and very extreme workouts. If it's not hard, it probably won't work, right? By the way, that's not true.

The second hazard is that as a high achiever, you're also someone that has high standards and expectations for yourself. Oh, man. Because the flip side, the dark side of high standards, is that failure can be incredibly demotivating when you fall short of those high standards.

So, when things don't go according to plan, your high standards can cause you to beat yourself up for not succeeding, which drains your motivation, and it can derail you for good.

Because this is the analogy I like to use. I had a conversation about this the other day because some of my clients were asking, like, hey, when do I need to…?

I do use some, let's say, strict short term nutrition strategies to cause weight loss fast, fat loss fast. And they were asking me, like, how do I know when I need to get off of this? I call it the Jump Start or the Phase One reset. I guess I've renamed it. Anyway. And also, with the workouts, how do I know if this is the right workout for me?

And what I want to tell you is this. Let's say you're sick and tired of seeing your body the way it is. And because of that feeling of being sick and tired, you're super motivated to do something about it. You're like, I will no longer stand for what I see in the mirror. That is not me. The real me is underneath all the fat suit. I've had a client tell me that, “I feel like I'm in a fat suit.”

And so what they do, that motivation drives them to get results fast. And, oh, it's also motivating. So, the pounds start coming off. The fat suit starts to disappear. You start to see the real you. But one of the things that usually happen here. Number one, hit a plateau.

And what I say to my clients: exercising and nutrition, or following an exercise and nutrition plan without seeing results, it's like going to work without getting paid. Can you relate? How long are you going to go to work hard without getting paid? You want to get paid. And the way you get paid for your diligence in following an exercise and nutrition routine is seeing a difference in your body, feeling a difference in your body.

So, plateaus, lack of results, kills motivation. The other thing is this. When you first start, you have a high level of motivation. You want to change. You're no longer accepting of where you are, your health, what you see in the mirror, all those things. And it drives you forward and you're feeling good.

But what you're doing is hard to keep up with the nutrition. You're starting to have trouble navigating your life, navigating the social situations, navigating your kid's birthday parties, navigating date night with your spouse, navigating business travel, navigating holidays travel and vacations.

And after a while, it starts to build up stress. It starts to stress you out. And the way we get rid of the stress of a restrictive diet is you give up. That's not what we do in the program, but that's what people do. What we do is we use a strict reset for some clients in some situations, but we transition them out of it into a less restrictive of eating plan.

But for most people, that's not what they do. They just give up. And it's kind of like you get in the car and you don't buckle your seatbelt right away, and it starts dinging. And you're like, “Man, I’ve got to buckle this seatbelt. I can't stand this dinging noise.” That's called negative reinforcement.

So, big picture here: These two psychological tendencies high achievers have, are choosing very challenging solutions that give fast results. But there's no exit plan. There's no transition away from it. It's quit. And two, having high standards that often end up becoming a torture device they use on themselves, things don't go according to plan.

Maybe you didn't lose weight. Maybe you “cheated.” Maybe you skipped a workout. And both of these tendencies can make you vulnerable to falling off the wagon when you're trying to take control of your health and fitness. And here's what I'll tell you. Just like we talked about, a plan based on what I shared above only works until something rocks the boat in your world and your situation changes, and life always finds a way to rock the boat.

I have a client, his mom just died. Now, he knew what was going to happen, but his mom just died. When I fell off the—when life rocked the boat for me in 2020, my dad got sick. He was sick for months and then died. And it doesn't always have to be something tragic like that. Maybe it's Christmas and there's more social eating and family time that knocks you off track, or maybe you have a busy travel schedule.

I remember I was training a client. He was flying all around the country. His business went from—I want to try to remember the numbers. It was like 300,000 to 60 million in ten years. And his company was growing so fast, it was really tough for him to keep up with and it was…Shout out to you, Damon, if you're still listening.

He was saying, “Listen, life is great, but it's just kind of stressful,” right? He felt bad saying that success can be stressful, but building stress can come from a good or bad place. It can come from a divorce, or it can come from everybody wants to work with you, and you're not sure how to scale your business to handle the demand. Stressful.

I'm dealing with that right now. We're getting a lot of people, and I'm having to create systems to deliver great results. So, it starts to get really tough to stick to your plan when life gets busy, because maybe you're like me. Maybe your work becomes more demanding than usual and you're too exhausted to stay disciplined with your choices.

Also, with a change in environment; if you move to a new place or if you're traveling like I do, it’s hard to keep on a highly restrictive diet and extreme workout, because those things, they just don't leave a lot of leeway for going off track.

And once you start to go off the rails, your high standards start to kick in with high levels of disappointment, you beat yourself up. Which crushes your motivation. And just like that, all your hard-won results are gone.

So, what's the takeaway from all of this? The real problem that I realized that my clients had and what I used to have in the past, it's more than learning how to diet or workout. They need to learn the meta skill of how to be consistent with making great health choices and how to get back on track without any pain or guilt, whenever life throws them a curveball.

Because, you know, life throws curveballs. It's what life does. It's not a bad thing. It's just an ‘is’ thing. It's just a reality thing. Think about it. In your history, the things that have caused you to get less healthy and gain weight weren't actually problems inside of you. They were your reactions to life's big curveballs.

And again, it's not always bad. It could be, but it could be you just had a baby and you're not sleeping so well. My heart goes out to all those new parents. I'll be there soon. A bad breakup or new partner, a big promotion. Now, I've had clients, they got promoted, and it was very challenging. A physical injury or sickness. It might not even be you who's sick. It could be someone in your family.

I had a client whose husband had a heart attack while we were working together. This is the stuff, folks. A hectic schedule, working from home, a big hairy work project.

So, the trick is to learn how to get back to creating and maintaining your peak health regardless of what life puts in front of you and find ways to get results, even when you're not 100% consistent, because that's not realistic for anyone. That's perfection. Which is another way of saying, setting yourself up for self-sabotage.

Perfectionism is another way of saying just self-sabotage but in a more like “~Oh, I'm just a perfectionist.” Another way of saying is like, I sabotage myself because nothing I do is ever good enough. So even as you enjoy that glass of champagne or luxury dessert you know is not strictly in your best health interests, you'll have an easy way to get back to healthy living without needing to give up great food and spontaneous fun.

What I do with my clients is I develop a carefully customized plan that will be iterated weekly. That's the only way forward, folks. A custom blueprint that is completely personal to you. It will help you understand how to cope and react when you get a curveball. It will develop your blueprint together over four months.

That's what I do. Which is how long you'll need to not only build new habits, but also learn how to begin to stay consistent with your success. And you can try to do this on your own, and I'm okay with that. I'm a super small business. Really, super small. If 100 people wanted to come work with me, I wouldn't be able to take them all.

So, if you're a person who wants to try this on their own, you have to constantly iterate, iterate, iterate until you have that personal blueprint. But I'll tell you: really hard to do. But once you learn this, either through trial and error on your own or working with me, your blueprint unlocks effortless, consistency and easy health decisions without any sense of restriction or struggle.

I don't feel like I'm getting lean again. I ate Nutella cheesecake the other day because I wanted to. I don't feel guilty after doing that, but I'm like, I need to watch the saturated fat content. I want to live for a very long time, but I do that. I eat Brazilian cheese bread. I'm in Sao Paulo, Brazil right now. I don't feel like I'm restricting or struggling.

And I had a client recently who just started working with me not too long ago, and I was showing her, hey, listen, here's my Greek yogurt. Here's my protein powder. Here's the tuna that I have. Here's the precooked chicken breast. And I said, “What are you taking away from what you see right now?”

She's like, “Ted, you've been in Mexico, Europe, and now you're in Brazil. And what I'm taking away from this is that you're always doing these habits no matter where you are, you're always doing these habits. You are you no matter where you are.” And I was like, boom. And it's not…It's because I figured out that blueprint for myself.

And once you figure this out, once you get your own blueprint, suddenly you're feeling great all the time. Everyone around you is telling you that you look fantastic. You're not even trying. For most of my clients, that gives them a feeling of freedom and rush of energy, optimism, and belief that the next 30 to 40 years of their life can be the best 30 to 40 years of their life.

And it could be true for you too. It's not as crazy as it sounds. I mean, just ask yourself, with what you've achieved in life so far, combined with excellent health and energy levels going forward, how much more could you enjoy life in the following areas? Being energetic, active and most importantly, present with your loved ones and partner, skiing, traveling, keeping up with the kids or grandkids if that's where you're at in your life.

Having plenty of energy to pour into your hobbies and work and getting great results without feeling like you're running on empty. Feeling confident about your body when you look in the mirror as you get dressed every morning. Comfortably leading from the front in your business and community and join the respect of your peers and employees without feeling tired or dumpy inside.

I mean, look, I've worked with busy entrepreneurs, CEOs and celebrities like Richard Branson, Robert Downey Jr., Ricky Martin, to name a few. I understand that high achievers like you live a different life, filled with a crazy number of curveballs all the time.

A life that may require you to have a hectic travel schedule, enjoy luxury dining while socializing and networking, and of course, to let yourself loose when spending time with loved ones and eating that slice of birthday cake with your daughter.

These are unique circumstances that you need to be able to handle easily to maintain your health and fitness. Again, it's not about diets or workouts, and unless you know how to keep your circumstances from controlling you, whatever diet or workout you do, it will never be enough to get the consistent results you want.

That's why creating your own blueprint that works for your life. Not your friend's life, not for my life, but your life. And make sure that it's aligned with your goals and lifestyle. That's how you can achieve long lasting results and become the superhero version of yourself, your super self.

I'm talking about the super self that you know you has the capacity to become, at the very least in terms of how you look and feel every day. But uncovering your super self, it's not the easiest thing to do. It takes a lot of iterating and trying things on for size to make sure it gets results and fits with your individual circumstances, physical condition and preferences.

And it also will change over the course of a year. And I'm speaking as someone who's done this with lots of my clients. And of course, I know your first instinct is to try to figure it out on your own, like you've done so many times before. And you could do that, and I'm fine with that, seriously.

If everyone who listened to my podcast wanted to join or wanted to hire me, I would have to put people on a very long waiting list because I will not sacrifice results to take on more clients, because that would basically end my business, right? I need to deliver results, and also, I need to enjoy my life.

But for those of you who want a better way and you want to avoid the trial and error which cost time, money, energy, and motivation, that you probably want to be dedicating to other aspects of your life, like your family, hobbies, and your work.

There's also a smarter way to do it, which is to stop trying to juggle everything by yourself and learn how to take better care of your health and fitness by doing less and getting better results than you ever had. And the upside of doing it this way is that you'll see those results ripple into the rest of your life very quickly.

I've got a client right now. He's really overweight, but he's already lost 10 pounds, and it's been less than two weeks. And his motivation, he's on fire. Now, I say that he will have challenges eventually, but isn't it nice to start off with a bang? You can ride that momentum when you're like, “Oh, my gosh, this is working. This is really working.”

It gives you the motivation so that when you do face the obstacles, when they do come, you'll have more power, more confidence, more motivation to get through it. So, I've been helping busy people just like yourself solve the challenges you're facing for the last 23 years of my life. Actually, almost 24.

It will be 24 in like two weeks. And if we work together, here's what you'll get: A personalized key to success with your health and fitness that you've been looking for. A sustainable, personalized blueprint to hit your goals, avoid resistance and get results almost as soon as we start. Just like my client who's lost 10 pounds in two weeks.

Now, that's unusual, but we usually get 4 to 6 pounds of weight loss in the first two weeks to get people motivated. We use a little strictness, but we transition you out of it. So results that will keep you motivated, having fun and sticking to the plan.

And to create that, we'll work together, paying close attention every week to what's working and what's not working for you, so that together we can develop your fail proof super self blueprint. As I mentioned earlier, it's common to see my clients drop 20 to 30 pounds in the first four months of working together, just from understanding and implementing their or individual blueprint.

Now, legally, I can't say that you're definitely going to lose 20 to 30 pounds, but that's what happens frequently. Your fail proof super self blueprint is about getting out of your way and getting away from the feeling of restriction and rigid control and moving you into a place of freedom and choice in your health and fitness.

With the blueprint in hand, you'll find yourself making great choices that will have you feeling better and better every week. And it won't feel like so much effort. It'll feel like, oh, this feels natural. I feel like I'm in the zone. I don't feel bored. I don't feel too much anxiety. I feel like I'm in the zone.

And as coach you, the first month of your personalized programming will look dramatically different from the fourth month as we co create it week by week. Your blueprint will be developed to fit with your individual circumstances, physical condition, preferences, and most importantly, you're developing sense of motivation and accomplishment.

So, if that sounds interesting to you, here's what it would look like to work with me. I'm starting something called your Fail Proof Super Self Blueprint. This is something new that I'm doing for 2023. I'm creating a small twelve person coaching group exclusively for busy entrepreneurs, executives, and business people who want to discover their own Fail Proof Super Self Blueprint.

And you'll have my personal attention each week in your weekly reviews and assessments. And you'll also have the support of a small group of people that are facing the same challenges as you. Because most people try to go it alone, lose motivation, feel isolated, and give up. But you'd be surprised at how many people are struggling with the same hurdles that you face.

The thing is that no one has a place to talk about these things. Struggling with health and fitness isn't a sexy conversation that you necessarily want to share with your colleagues, friends, and maybe not even with your family. You don't want to worry people or expose them, or expose something that's sensitive for you.

Having a group to give you motivation and inspiration from everyone's wins of weighted curveballs is incredibly motivating and uplifting. So, the combination of group work combined with personal attention from my team and I will ensure your success.

And in four months, here's what you can expect to experience. Onboarding with me, that will include assessments, goal setting and ongoing creation of your personalized blueprint. A weekly 60 minutes highly interactive group coaching call sharing wins and challenges, and it's recorded if you can't make it.

Weekly personalized review video with individual feedback from me or my senior coaching staff. 24/7 chat access to my team and I. Access to my exclusive app that will hold your personalized workouts and nutrition plan, progress tracker, and more. A midterm one-on-one call with me. Access to an exclusive group chat.

Monthly progress report with advice to help keep you leveling up and Fail Proof Results Course where you're going to learn the mindset skills, key principles to get and keep your results. And all of these things will be carefully structured and given to you by my team in the right timing for you, so that you'll never be overwhelmed or stuck about what to do next.

So how can you secure your spot for the Fail Proof Super Self Blueprint group? All you have to do is let my chat team know that you're in, if the following is a good fit for you, if you are a person who is willing to get results, is willing to work hard for the results.

And when I mean hard, I don't mean the strict diets and the keto and the paleo and the intermittent fasting. I'm talking about doing the work to show up to coaching calls. I'm talking about getting back on track when you fall off. That's it.

So that is it for today. I hope you took away a lot out of this episode. And if this talk about finally creating the body, the health and the life you want, resonates with you and you'd be interested in working with me to develop your own blueprint so that you never fail at sticking to your health and fitness routines, you can reach out to my chat team.
